Set in the very heart of Tulamben village, Tulamben Wreck Divers Resort offers something increasingly rare: genuine convenience matched with honest value. You will not find pretension here. What you will find is a spotless, welcoming base where the famous USAT Liberty wreck lies literally a 2-minute stroll across the road. Roll out of bed, grab your kit, and you are wading into one of the world's most accessible and rewarding shore dives.
Tulamben Wreck Divers strikes a clever balance. Accommodation is grouped around 2 swimming pools, including a deep, purpose-built training pool that meets PADI standards for serious skill development. Choose from 6 penthouse rooms (upstairs balconies offer sea views), 4 superior rooms, or 3 deluxe options, all poolside, all with ensuites. The grounds are shady, tree-lined, and genuinely cool after a morning underwater. An on-site espresso café and restaurant means you are never far from good coffee or a proper meal, though the village's other eateries are a short walk along the main road.
Where Tulamben Wreck Divers truly distinguishes itself is underwater operations. The resort runs 3 of its own carefully maintained compressors, supplies both air and nitrox, and operates as a PADI 5-Star centre. It means equipment is cleaned to western standards, maintenance schedules are adhered to, and your safety is not left to chance. Dive guides are not freelancers picked up for the week, they are permanent local staff, most of whom have been with Tulamben Wreck Divers since it opened in 2003. That depth of knowledge transforms a dive. They know where the pygmy seahorses hide, which corners of the Liberty hold the ghost pipefish, and how to read the current along the Drop Off.
Service at is notably personal. Each room or small group is assigned its own guide, and group sizes stay small. Tulamben Wreck Divers Resort also includes all diving gear in its packages - no hidden rental fees. Transfers from Kuta are included too, as is a cooked breakfast (not just a continental afterthought). You only need a 20% deposit to secure your booking, with the balance payable on arrival. That flexibility speaks to a confidence in the experience they provide.
For scuba divers who want proximity, competence, and no unnecessary frills, Tulamben Wreck Divers Resort is hard to beat. It is not a high-end luxury resort. It is a well-run, friendly operation under long-term Australian ownership, with staff who clearly take pride in showing you the Liberty's treasures. And at the end of a 2-tank morning, that massage by the pool? Entirely optional but very easy to say yes to.
Rooms at Tulamben Wreck Divers sit behind the dive shop in a shaded, tree-lined garden. You get 3 categories to choose from, all clustered around the pools. All share the same practical approach: clean, spacious for Tulamben, and fitted with local hand-made teak furniture.
-
Penthouse Rooms (6 units): These are upstairs, newest, and the resort's best. Each has a king bed plus a single, an ensuite bathroom, and a balcony. The upstairs penthouses look out over the pools towards the sea. Morning coffee with a volcano view is not a bad start to a dive day.
-
Deluxe Rooms (3 units): Poolside and ground level. King bed plus a single. Ensuite bathroom. These have direct pool and garden access. Step out your door, walk a few metres, and you are at the water's edge of the pool. Good for surface intervals or non-diving partners who want to lounge close to the room.
-
Superior Rooms (4 units): 2 upstairs, 2 downstairs. All overlook the pools. Same layout: king bed, single bed, ensuite. The downstairs rooms open onto the pool area. The upstairs ones have a bit more breeze and front-back views. Solid, comfortable, no surprises.
All the rooms have:
- Air-conditioning and ceiling fans
- Poolfront or seaview
- Private bathroom with hot water shower and bath
- Toiletries and towels
- Balcony or patio
- Television and DVD player
- Minibar fridge
- Coffee and tea making facilities
- Personal safe
- Bedside lights
- Table and chairs
- Cabinet for storage
The gardens keep things cool. The pools are right there. And the Liberty wreck is a two-minute walk across the road. You are not here for the thread count. You are here to dive. But after a day on the wreck, a clean, quiet room with cold air conditioning and a hot shower feels exactly right.
Diving facilities on site:
Tulamben Wreck Divers runs a PADI 5-Star operation with three on-site compressors, carefully maintained. Both air and nitrox are available. The resort has a purpose-built training pool, 3.6 metres deep, which meets PADI standards for skill development. Rinse tanks and fresh water showers are located back at the resort, a short walk from the shore. Rental gear is available, including BCDs and regulators. The dive shop is opposite the Liberty wreck. You walk 2 minutes to the water. Local Balinese women carry tanks and kit to the shore for you. This saves your energy for diving, not hauling gear in tropical heat.
Daily diving schedule:
The programme is relaxed and built around you. No fixed cattle boat timings. You request when and where you want to dive. Standard practice: morning dives start after breakfast, usually 2 dives per day. Afternoon and night dives are available on request. Night dives cost slightly more. For those who want more bottom time, Tulamben Wreck Divers offers an unlimited diving package at a flat daily rate. One divemaster is assigned to each small group or individual room. Group sizes stay small. This is not a factory operation.
Dive site options:
The Liberty wreck is the main attraction. It sits directly off the beach, accessible as a shore dive, with the bow at 4 metres and the stern around 30 metres. You can dive it once or every day for a week and still find new details.
Other local sites, all reachable as shore dives or short drives:
- Tulamben Drop Off: starts at 1 metre, drops past 40 metres.
- Coral Garden: directly opposite the resort.
- Shark Point: as named, for reef sharks.
- Tulamben Drift: from the bay to the Liberty, 5-15 metres.
- Batu Ringit (Mystery Rocks): 6 kilometres away, beach entry.
- Rubaya: one kilometre from Tulamben.
- Kubu (Monkey Bungalows): a few kilometres away.
Day trips further afield - Tulamben Wreck Divers can arrange diving at:
Amed: 20 minutes south.
Padang Bai and Candi Dasa.
Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan (mola mola sunfish possible).
Menjangan Island: limited daily diver numbers to preserve the reef.
Dive type options:
- Shore diving from the beach in front of the resort.
- Night diving on the Liberty wreck and nearby sites.
- Drift diving at Tulamben Drift.
- Deep diving on the Drop Off.
- Snorkelling: the Liberty wreck is also excellent from the surface.
- Introductory dives for beginners.
- Refresher courses for rusty divers.
- Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue, and specialty courses including nitrox.
Safety and emergency:
The resort keeps a first aid kit on site. Emergency oxygen is readily available. Each dive group has its own divemaster. The nearest recompression chamber is in Denpasar, south Bali, roughly 120 kilometres away. Evacuation time from Tulamben is approximately 3 hours. You must have your own dive insurance to access it. There is a tourist police station and a clinic in Tulamben village. The nearest hospital is in Amlapura, 25 kilometres away.
When you surface from the Liberty wreck, Tulamben Wreck Divers Resort has you sorted. The resort sits around 2 swimming pools. One is a standard pool for lounging. The other is a deep, purpose-built training pool, 3.6 metres down, used for skill development but also a quiet spot to cool off. Shady, tree-lined gardens keep the heat manageable. An on-site espresso cafe and restaurant serves proper coffee and meals, though the village's other eateries are a short walk along the main road.
Massage is available in your room or by the pool. After a 2-tank morning, this is not a luxury, just common sense. The resort also runs a small tour desk. Tulamben Wreck Divers can arrange car or motorbike hire if you want to explore independently. Or take one of their day tours in an air-conditioned vehicle with a guide. Options include Besakih Temple, the water palaces at Tirta Gangga, the Kintamani volcano viewpoint, Ubud's art markets, or white water rafting on the Telaga Waja River.
Resort facilities include: 2 swimming pools (one deep training pool) - On-site espresso cafe and restaurant - In-room or poolside massage service - Complimentary internet access in reception - Tour desk with guided day trips - Car and motorbike hire - Laundry service - Babysitting and cots available - Airport and hotel transfer service (air-conditioned vehicle)
Tulamben Wreck Divers is not a resort that locks you in. You can stay close, relax by the pool, eat on site, and get a massage. Or you can use their local knowledge to see Bali's north east corner. Either way, the choice is yours.
Breakfast at Tulamben Wreck Divers Resort is included in the package. It arrives in your room. No need to rush, queue, or dress before coffee. You eat on your balcony or at your own table, with a view of the pool or the garden. The breakfast spread covers fruit salad, cereal, eggs, crackers, tea and coffee. It is not a buffet. It is private, quiet, and lets you start the dive day at your own pace.
The resort has its own on-site espresso cafe and restaurant. Good coffee. Proper meals. You can eat there between dives or in the evening without leaving the property. Each room has a minibar fridge. There are also tea and coffee making facilities. So a hot drink before a dawn dive, or a cold water after a long surface interval, is always on hand.
But you are not locked in. Tulamben village has a string of small restaurants and other resort eateries a short walk along the main road. Variety is easy. Walk out your door, turn left or right, and you will find a local meal. The choice is yours. Stay in, stroll out. Either way, you eat well.
"
The owner of the resort contacted us via WhatsApp to keep us informed of the airport pickup and transfer. When we arrived at the airport, we were promptly met by the resort driver and transferred to the resort.
The resort was conveniently located for diving. The room and the bathroom at the resort were spacious and clean. The bed was very comfortable.
All the staff members were very friendly and helpful. Our dive guide was awesome. He was very knowledgeable with the macro subjects and was able to identify all the critters we had found. The diving in Tulamben was awesome." -

"
We did our PADI open water dive with the operator and it includes all training, the equipment that was provided to us were of good condition and often checked each time before we embark on our scuba journey. The staff were all friendly and helpful and they were joyous to chat with. The instructor that was with us throughout, Erik Sanjaya was extremely patient, pro-active and excellent. Always provided tips on how to make our diving trip more memorable and were very accommodating." -

"
Staff at Tulamben Wreck Divers were very attentive and informative. The dive guides, especially Jaya, were very good and made sure you got good value for money on each dive. The guides are on commission and do an almost constant charming, but hard sell. If you have your own equipment, I'd recommend taking it as not all of the rental equipment was in good working condition (eg depth gauges and compasses were faulty and/or broken), rental wetsuits and boots weren't always available in your size etc." -
Clare Phillips, Australia, 6 May 2011 ...
"
The place was much better than I expected, equipment is in good order and staff is very friendly and helpful. Everyting was organized in a very professional way." -

"
Staff were extremely friendly, very welcoming and helpful; facilities were clean, organized, and all that we needed; instructor was very patient and professional; the equipment provided was fine overall, apart from the wetsuits, masks, and boots which were very worn out." -
