The purpose-built SMY Ondina is a beautiful teak and tropical wood Buginese diving schooner built with traditional styling. Specialising in Indonesia liveaboard cruises around Komodo and Raja Ampat (Papua Province), it runs trips of various durations, plus special photography and exploratory safaris.

8 air-conditioned cabins with en-suite bathrooms, a wide range of photographic facilities and a huge sundeck all combine to make a comfortable and well-equipped Indonesian liveaboard. With nitrox available for use for those with suitable qualifications, you can really spend more time exploring underwater.

For underwater photo enthusiasts, you'll find Ondina well equipped and several of the departures have guest Pro' photographers, such as Deb Fuggitt, so please enquire if you have a special interest in these trips. The boat kit up area has a secure camera table, battery charging points and padded freshwater tanks to rinse your camera equipment. There is an air pressure gun to blow-dry your camera, and a CD/DVD disc writing service.

Perhaps the European-owned Ondina's best feature is its management's accommodating attitude towards diverse customer interests and needs. The dive crew have plenty of experience in dealing simultaneously with professional and hardcore divers as well as newly-qualifieds. This is managed by the use of small dive groups and also involving customers in planning a less rigid itinerary.

From April to October, Ondina ventures to destinations including Sulawesi, Halmahera, the Bandas, Lombok, Komodo and Flores; and from November to March it specialises in Raja Ampat diving cruises.

Relax and drink a welcome fruit juice while the tour leader introduces the boat, facilities and crew. There might be a check dive in the afternoon and a night dive in the Lembeh Strait, depending on guest arrival times. So set up your dive gear on the dive deck, enjoy the dives, then wait for dinner to be served. Your diving vacation has just started!

Days 2-11
This is a new route that involves a degree of exploration in little visited world class diving regions. Unforgettable underwater encounters await you in Kalimantan, Eastern Borneo. From manta rays and sharks at Sangalaki, and the chance to see whale sharks as well, non-stinging jellyfish in a fresh water lake in Kakaban, even thresher sharks, leopard sharks, loads of turtles and schools of eagle rays when you hit the water in Maratua. Here the often strong current brings nutrients that attract big schools of fish and pelagics like barracuda, trevallies and meaty tuna. Muck divers get more than their fair share of critters in the shallow waters of Derawan, such as pygmy seahorses, frogfish, blue ring octopus, wonderpus, ghost pipefish and shrimp fish.
Elsewhere, Bunaken National Park has some of the best wall diving in the world and visibility is often excellent.. The biodiversity is second to none, from mandarinfish and the smallest commensal shrimp to blacktip reef sharks, Napoleon wrasse and eagle rays. The park is also home to dugongs, and sperm whales migrate through the area.
No place on the planet gives you the chance to see more shy critters such as the mimic octopus, flamboyant cuttlefish, harlequin shrimps, skeleton shrimps, seahorses, frogfish and innumerable nudibranchs than the Lembeh Strait. Day after day you will want to extend your bottom time!
Wake up and come out of your comfortable cabin to have some tea and biscuits in the dining room. Depth, currents, potential marine encounters, and security devices are covered during the dive briefing that introduces the 1st morning dive. You will hear 3 other dive briefings on most days, as there is also a 2nd morning dive, an afternoon dive and a sunset or night dive that concludes the underwater action for the day. Some other days the 4th dive will be replaced by a pleasant walk on a deserted beach or a visit to a nearby fishing village.
A breakfast of toast, cereals, omelette and French toast, plus fresh fruits are served after the first dive of the day. A 3 meal lunch is served around 12:30 hrs in the dining room, while dinner is after the night dive and features hot soup, a choice between 2 main courses, and a delicious homemade dessert. After dinner a photo show about the diving encounters of the day gather all divers in the saloon for enchanting exchanges of ideas of fish names and memories from previous trips.
On the last full day of the tour there are only 2 dives scheduled since the boat needs to make its way to port.

Day 12
Time for farewells as you have reached the end of your safari. Enjoy breakfast with your fellow divers before heading to Tarakan airport or hotel, depending on your travel plans.
