The diving in North Male Atoll in the Central Atolls is characterised by channels, drop offs, pinnacles and coral reefs. The region is the most popular dive destination in the Maldives, not simply because of its easy access for international visitors, but for its attractions of manta rays, reef sharks, an abundance of reef fish including pelagics, and several interesting wrecks.
Dive sites include Beyru Faru, Faru Corner, Banana Reef – a popular choice with photographers due to its healthy hard corals, large schools of bannerfish and snappers, Napoleon wrasse, and varied scenery including overhangs and caverns. The Maldives Victory is the most famous wreck in the area. It’s a deep dive onto a 100m cargo ship that sank in 1981 and which sits almost upright, making it easy to explore. Here you can expect to see batfish, groupers, fusiliers, and maybe a turtle or two.
Hulhumale Diving School is ideally located near the beach and close to the international airport and Male City. They offer daily dhoni dive boat trips at 8:30 am to the best dive spots in North Male. These excursions are suitable for beginners, newly-certified divers, as well as more experienced underwater adventurers. You can join for 1, 2 or 3 dives per day (1/2 dive days return at 1:30 pm, 3 dive days return at 2:30 pm). You could take a convenient accommodation and diving package, or simply book day trips if you prefer to book your own accommodation.
North Male is also a great place to experience the underwater world for the first time. You could take a non-diver package and book a “try-dive” (PADI Discover Scuba Diving), or learn to dive in 3 days and earn your full scuba diving license (PADI Open Water Diver).
Hulhumale is an artificial island located in the south of North Male Atoll. It was reclaimed from the sea and opened in 2004 to establish new land required to meet the existing and future housing, industrial and commercial needs of the citizens of Male and the Maldives.
