This Earth Day celebrate our planet by helping Seacology protect islands and coral reefs.
Earth Day is celebrated every year on the 22nd April. The first one took place in 1970 and was proposed in response to concerns about water and air pollution, and smog. The Earth Day organisation co-ordinates the teaching of environmental topics in schools and the creation of community events centred around protecting the environment.
Seacology is the world’s premier international environmental non-profit organisation that focuses on saving endangered species, habitats and cultures of islands. In the last 400 years the majority of the world’s plant and animal extinctions have taken place on islands, Seacology strives to preserve this highly endangered biodiversity throughout the world.
Islands cover just 5% of the world’s land area, but they provide some of the most rewarding diving destinations such as the Maldives, Cocos Island, the Galapagos Islands, the Similan Islands in Thailand and the islands of Indonesia.
Two ways to help Seacology save our planet this Earth Day:
- ‘Like’ US-based jewellery shop Nina Designs on their Facebook page. This enterprise supports fair trade and womens equality in Thailand and in Bali, Indonesia. They will donate $1 to Seacology for every person who clicks the like button on Facebook before 22nd April.
- Give yourself or a loved one a Happy Earth Day present and save an acre of coral reef! For just $40, you can help Seacology protect one of these special island habitats, and you or your recipient will receive a beautiful card with a photo of the place you helped to save. Go to save an acre now and follow the simple instructions.
So don’t delay, act now and do something worthwhile this Earth Day!
