No child grows up these days dreaming of being an explorer hoping to discover new lands. It has all been done. Names like Columbus, Magellan, Raleigh and Cortez were there at the golden age of exploration and we can only imagine what those wondrous, exciting times were like.

Children a few generations from now might look back at this period with wonder – at a time when the seas were full of vibrant coral reefs and vast numbers of multi-coloured reef fish and fascinating creatures galore.

It isn’t difficult to imagine a future seascape very different from our own if climate change and ocean acidification are taken to their natural conclusion. Dull seascapes with one or 2 drab colonising sponges or corals covering everything as a few boring creatures cling on to life beneath a water column where jellyfish thrive in numbers beyond our imagination. In fact this process is already underway.

People will look back at the period from the middle of the 20th century, when SCUBA was invented and into the 21st century as an incredible golden age. During this time it was possible to strap on a tank of compressed air and sink beneath the waves to see incredible sights of colour and life.

They will wonder why we didn’t do it more. We had the technology and the natural world was still capable of supporting incredible marine ecosystems, the kind of which they only see in images and stock footage from the past.
