Unless you’ve been doing surface interval to surface interval dives for the last week from a boat or island with no outside communications, you’ve probably heard of the political situation in Bangkok by now. There are anti-government protests going on. Nothing dangerous like the recent news from Mumbai, but disruptive for those passing through Bangkok airport.
But as world governments rush to issue travel warnings, the rest of Thailand wants to let the world know that it’s pretty much business as usual in their neck of the woods.
Things are no different than the usual great weather, fantastic diving and unparalleled tourism atmosphere that rules Phuket.
Although most divers heading to the best of Thailand’s dive sites tend to travel directly to airports in the south of Thailand anyway, it is best to avoid Bangkok’s airport for the time being, unless, of course, you like long queues and delays. But who does?
Phuket’s International Airport can be reached via direct flights from many international destinations including Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, routes which have seen no cancellations in the recent days and remains normal. Direct flights into Krabi enjoy similar uninterrupted service and especially divers en route to Thailand can look forward to the hassle free diving holiday or liveaboard that they booked.
So let them protest and cause disruption to the airport in Bangkok if they wish. The capital is over 840 km away, about the same distance from London to Stuttgart. A few protests in the capital don’t affect those of us in Phuket and they need not affect you or your holiday plans either.
If you haven’t booked your liveaboard diving holiday to Thailand yet, then now is in fact a great time to take advantage of the great last minute diving specials that abound this time of year.
